My Highest Recommendation
If you are seeking an enchanting, unique, beautiful and comfortable place to stay or host an event in New Orleans, look no further. Nothing could possibly compare. These unique buildings and grounds have so many interesting features, that all guests will be enthralled. The decor is most tasteful and creates an ambiance of the past, but with all the modern comforts. The owners and the lovely manager were most gracious, and helped me with contacts for catering and wine. They were so helpful and attentive to my needs in preparing for an important meeting (international researchers), and all who attended the reception were charmed by this incrediable home. I hope to return again, and relax with friends, for with the 3 buildings and multiple guest rooms, it would make a wonderful and memorable place to vacation with loved ones. My highest recommendation! Alexandra of Duke (Date of stay: April 2011)
Unique venue in NOLA
I am so glad we used this venue!! There is no where else like it in New Orleans. Our guests & family enjoyed exploring this eclectic place, filled with unique art & antiques. There are treasures hidden around every corner, beautiful landscaping & lighting. It was exactly what I was looking for & more. We wanted something different & we got it. Its not your cookie-cutter venue where you have to use their food & bar packages. You can do as much or as little as you want with this place. They can suggest many venders but you are free to use whom ever you want, including doing everything yourself. The house doesn’t need anything, it is beautiful as is, but can be decorated however you want. We rented some tables & chairs, catered some things ourselves & had the rest professionally catered, bought all our own alcohol & a friend bartended. We used a pro DJ but the house comes with a great sound system that we could have used. We were able to rent the house(s) for 2 days & set up the day before then stay the night on our wedding night. We had about 10 ppl stay both nights & were very comfortable. We had about 110-20 guests total & many traveled from all over the country & world. They were so impressed with how unique this place was, said they had never been to a more fun & unique wedding. You can also rent the houses on the compound for a weekend or week(s) for a family vacation or meetings. I highly recommend going on a tour, you will fall in love! Eclectic New Orleans
This is a fabulous, unique wedding venue. The courtyards are so New Orleans and the Creole cottage and Greek revival row house are eclectically decorated. The venue is impressive to locals and visiting guests. Barbara (wedding 10/15/2011, posted to The Knot 11/15/2011)
Magical and Unforgettable – Must See!
Could there be a more perfect place to celebrate your marriage with your closest friends and family? Nope – look no further. How to describe R&R: exquisite, international, a home, infinitely interesting, warm, affordable, complexly beautiful, simply beautiful, convenient, large, luxurious, intimate, yours for the whole weekend!, managed by people who care… people who will end up being friends. I could go on and on. My husband and I live in Nola, and knew that a church setting wasn’t for us. We looked at historic properties and fancy restaurants.. but the vibe just wasn’t right. Also, we shuddered at the thought of packing up our wedding and all of our out-of-town guests at midnight. We wanted to celebrate till the wee hours of the morning (which we did!) Race and Religious was perfect. Two historic mansions, a servants quarters, a beautiful brick-walled courtyard with a pool, palms and bougainvillea. Inside, its murals, art and artisan furniture come from all over the world – Belarus to Buenos Aires. It’s at once historic, complex, whimsical, funky, and gorgeous. Like other reviewers have said, our wedding was truly magical here. It was the right price. For the same amount of money as other one-night 5:00pm-midnight venues, we rented Race and Religious from 2pm Friday to 2pm Sunday. Not only does that afford you easy set-up and move-out time, many of your guests can sleep on-site in beautiful bedroom suites! Vesta, the property manager, is friendly, cool, and totally accommodating. I visited the property four times(!) before our wedding to introduce various vendors and solidify our game plan. In the months leading up to our wedding, she kept us informed of all property improvements, cute decorating and smart set-up ideas from other weddings, etc. And she cried at our wedding… need I say more? All in all, Race and Religious was perfect – it has my highest recommendation, especially for couples who wish for their venue to mirror the unique beauty of their union. All I can say is – go take a look! If it’s for you, you’ll know instantly. …and that’s a huge check mark on the wedding preparation list 🙂 Also, I know they have plans to add wedding planning and in-house catering services. Voila. Venue is bursting with character
R & R was as amazing as my husband and I thought it was when we first saw it. We had another venue booked and asked for our deposit back so we could get this place. It is spectacular and almost like a museum, but a fun museum. The owners did a fabulous job of decorating with antiques and it has a European feel. You almost forget you are in the states. There are 2 houses and 1 slave quarters built in 1830’s plus 2 courtyards and pool. Our wedding was 150 people. We rented tables and chairs for outside for 50 people. Many locals that were guests had always wondered what the venue was like inside and the simply loved it. Vesta, the property manager was amazing and very flexible with my multiple planning visits. Couldn’t have been any better!
I really couldn’t have been any happier with Race & Religious! My husband & I live in North Alabama and were looking for a unique courtyard style atmosphere for our destination wedding in New Orleans. I found a link online for R & R and was immediately interested so we booked a visit while in town. We’d visited several other venues around the French Quarter but they didn’t even come close to Race & Religious. Upon arriving, we instantly fell in love, IT’S GORGEOUS! The location consists of two houses, an attached former slave quarters, courtyard, & small pool. It’s decorated in rich, oversized antiques from all over the world and every time you visit you notice something different that you didn’t the time before. The place has so much character that you don’t even need to bother with adding decorations. We used nothing but candles (from Luminous Events) for our early evening wedding and it was simply stunning! I can’t explain how many times I heard “This place unbelievable, how in the world did you find it!?!” We worked closely with Vesta Burke, the property manager who was always super easy to work with. She was very helpful with giving us feedback on how things ran & what vendors were good to work with. With us having to make sporadic trips down to New Orleans, she was always willing & able to let us visit the venue to get a better idea in person of what we need to plan, expect, etc. On top of all of this, the price is very reasonable, especially for getting the entire location to just your party and not having to share it with outside guests wandering through. Race & Religious is perfect for all types of events, not just weddings. Our entire wedding party agreed that we all want to make an annual trip here because we all love it so much! The best way I can describe the place is upscale and sophisticated, yet quirky & laid back. We could not have found a more perfect place for us! LOVE IT!!!! Most amazing Venue!
Couldn’t have picked a more perfect setting for our New Orleans wedding. We rented the property for the weekend. We were able to have the rehearsal dinner there the night before & it was amazing and we all found ourselves in the pool!! On the day of the wedding the girls stayed in one house the guys in the other. It had all the amenities of home but the charm and uniqueness you could ever hope for. Vesta, the manager was the best. She responded to my every inquiry and need. Most people said it was the most unique wedding they had ever been too! Mary (wedding 9/17/2011, posted to The Knot 10/6/2011)
stunning and unforgettable
you really need to take a tour of the venue to believe just how incredible the grounds are. it is beautiful inside and out, and it can accommodate intimate gatherings as well as large weddings like we had. the staff members are so kind, respectful and eager to help and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. a little piece of heaven
Being from New Orleans, I was thoroughly impressed and WOW’d when we found Race & Religious to have our wedding. When my now husband and i walked in we knew right away that this was the place for us. We live in NYC and wanted something interesting and unique for visitors but also people that live in LA. Vesta, Mathilde, and the R&R team were extremely accommodating and made the weekend perfect for us! Our wedding is the wedding pictured on the site and since we wanted a DIY touch, this was the perfect setting for that as well as our traditional NOLA jazz band. Each person at the wedding said it was the most romantic and beautiful wedding they had ever been to and it definitely had lots to do with the setting. there is more than enough space to accommodate at least 300 people. It was fun for guests as they got to discover the unique little nooks and crannies around each corner. I will admit that if you want to leave the DIY stress behind, hire a wedding planner because the day of was lots of running around and putting everything into place, which i enjoy and had lots of help doing but it is a bit stressful. My parents and some family also stayed there the weekend of, so this made it a bit easier! The most upsetting part of March 13th, 2011 (the day after the wedding) was that we no longer have ties to this place. I was hoping my husband would buy it for us for my wedding present. 😉 Enjoy the many, many beauties of Race & Religious! Carla (wedding 3/12/2011, posted to The Knot 6/4/2011)
New Orleans Trip
I came down with a group of my guy friends/family for 5 days during Jazz Fest weekend. The group was from across the country and all of us in our late 20’s. Without question this was the most beautiful house I have ever stayed in and 100% of the group seconded that. The art work, decoration and history contained in the 3 buildings (yes it is 3 buildings AND a pool) is absolutely jaw dropping. I have to be honest that after looking at pictures online and I had an overwhelming sense that this place was way too good to be true. Without a doubt the place exceeded all expectations. The owner stopped by once and couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating through the whole process. The location is a bit off the beaten path so don’t expect Bourbon street to be right out the front door. However, it is an 10 minute cab ride to any of the main draws of NOLA and never had any issue calling cabs and having them show up promptly. Amazing stay in an amazing place!!!
I had my wedding at this location and had my family stay in the two houses for four nights over the wedding weekend- The houses are incredibly restored with both historical preservation and interesting re-puposing of materials- the art and style of the house are eclectic and totally comfortable. The pool was an enormous hit with the kids and everything else with the adults. The owners and managers were very friendly and helpful, and easy to reach and respond to any questions or concerns- This place is an incredible gem- I feel so lucky we spent one of the most important weekends of our life here!! We cannot praise it enough -happy honeymooners (Date of Stay: May 2011, Review submitted to Home Away: June 2, 2011)
Frequent visitor from Texas
I’ve stayed at Race and Religious several times and find it hard to express how incredible an experience it is. It’s like stepping into a delicious, eclectic European fairy tale. The art and artifacts, the furnishings, the dozens of rugs in vivid colors and designs. The courtyard and pool, the stained glass doors, the frescos, paintings and antique window shutter cabinets, the dozens and dozens of tiny lamps and stunning lighting fixtures, the gorgeous stoves, the amazing walls of all three houses – it literally takes days for the eye to take it all in. It’s simply staggering. I could (obviously) go on and on about Race and Religious. It’s more than a just a villa or a nice place to stay. It’s a destination that’s very hard to leave. When I’m there, I can hardly make myself go out because the houses and grounds are so inviting. But it’s just minutes from the French Quarter, and from Magazine Street and its great cafes, restaurants, shops and bars, some of which are within walking distance. When I have to go back to Texas, I feel homesick for days after I get back. Race and Religious is a visual feast and a soul experience you can’t forget. The age and originality, the architectural and historical character, the helter skelter mix of Cuban, Creole, French, Spanish and Lord knows what other influences blend into pure magic. My friends and family are haunted by the beauty and magic of Race and Religious, too. They talk about it for weeks after they’re back home. Even the palm trees are special – they’re full of green parrots. The owners are great, too. I love this place! (Date of stay: July 2010, Review submitted to Home Away: December 26, 2010)
